Collaboration with Science Museum on Battery Workshop

Our team worked with the staff members at the Tinkering Activities in OKC science museum to prepare battery workshop activity and we are thankful to NSF for their support. There will be a special section on batteries this month! Check to learn how batteries work and let your kids make their own using ketchup packages!

Grandparent University

Our research group has participated in the Grandparent University activity. Grandparents and grandkids had the chance to build their own lemon batteries, hand-batteries and aluminum-air batteries using household items. They have a chance to learn the fundamentals of Li-ion battery operation principles via “Jenga Batteries”. In our session, we discussed the law of conservation of energy, type of energies and energy storage systems.

Women in Science Conference

Our research group has participated in the Woman in Science Conference located in OKC Science Museum. The graduate student in our group, Hannah Dykes demonstrated lemon batteries, hand-batteries and aluminum-air batteries using household items.

NASA OKSG Stellar – Battery Lecture

Our research group has participated in the NASA STELLAR program organized by the NASA Oklahoma space consortium. Dr. Çapraz gave half-day long lectures including hands-on experiments about batteries to teachers from K-12 schools across the state of Oklahoma. We also appreciate the kind words from the attendees. It was very fun to work with teachers and educate them about the basics of batteries.

The STELLAR program requires these participants to conduct a hands-on STEM workshop with at least ten to fifteen K-12 students around their schools. Therefore, our efforts on educating the future of the nation about energy technologies will be exponentially expanded to many students in Oklahoma.

Career Webinar for Graduate Students

Panelists from different professions were invited to share their academic / industrial journey with the graduate students in the School of Chemical Engineering. So far, the following speakers participate in our career webinar program: Dr. Elif Miskioglu, Dr. Leon Dean, Dr. Shailesh Dangwal, Dr. John Burnett, Dr. Zelin Xu, Sonika Rajput and Darrell Gregory.

ChemKidz

Elementary school students at Westwood Elementary School built their own potato batteries, discussed the general concept of electrochemical energy storage and learned the basics of electrochemistry.

National Lab Day

High school students has visited our laboratory. Our graduate student, Bertan Ozdogru discuss battery manufacturing processes and battery operations.
